FAQ

Q. What is the easiest way to implement the times table program?
A. Print one booklet per student, give students 5 minutes to complete the sheet in silence, correct sheets as a class for immediate feedback.

Q. Would you recommend allowing students to use a calculator?
A.

  • Times tables booklets: In the past I have allowed students to use a calculator though I make them keep it on the floor and pick it up for each question they want to use it for. It encourages them to use mental strategies where possible and to put effort into trying to remember times tables they don’t know. It also helps them see that just because they have a calculator in their pocket almost always (generally in the form of a smart phone), it is not always the most efficient method for “doing maths” in their daily life.
  • Level 1 and 2 booklets: Unless a student was on an individual learning plan, I wouldn't allow students to use a calculator for these questions.

Q. What would you recommend using once students have mastered the skills within the Level 2 warm up?
A. Numeracy Ninjas warm up books found here.
