Mathsquad is a collection of resources and strategies that can be used in any combination to enhance an existing Year 7 maths program or combined together to fully resource the year’s work within the subject. The four components of Maths-“quad” are outlined below. Following this, under the heading “putting it all together”, a Year 7 Mathsquad Drive Program is introduced. The Mathsquad Homework Program is centred around weekly homework sheets that repeatedly cover the same key skills. The number one goal of the Mathsquad homework program is to improve retention of key skills that students are learning. The Mathsquad Times Table Program involves students completing times table quizzes within a little warm up book at the beginning of each lesson. The goal of the times table program is to improve the efficiency in which students recall their times tables and related facts. This is incredibly important as a quick look over the Victorian Curriculum reveals that over 50% of Year 7 maths skills depend on this knowledge (75% when looking at skills involving number and algebra). The Mathsquad Skill Development Program is a collection of resources that aim to build students’ knowledge and understanding of the skills contained within the homework books. Beginning with a textbook-type document that is sequenced so students can be guided to gradually build their skills, over time this section will be built upon to include more examples, questions and activities relating to the homework skills.
